    A Note from Lynette

    Dear Moms and Dads,

During the month of February Hilltop will be celebrating love in lieu of Valentine's day we will Heartstake this month to explore and understand love. We will talk about love and the ways we express our love to our families, friends and maybe even pets. Some projects ideas are to explore, writing letters, cards and mailing. This year we will be providing opportunities in the classroom for children to create meaningful expressions of their love so Valentines will not be necessary.

Also at some point in the month we will be having a special treat for snack, heart shaped bagels with strawberry cream cheese.

    Love,
    The Hilltop Teachers

Safari Night is Coming March 6

[note date change to March 6th so it doesn't conflict with the CCPPNS conference which is on the 12-13th of March]

Mark your calendars as your kids will not want to miss this fun night and important fund-raiser for the school! Safari Night will be held Saturday night March 6th from 4:30pm to 8:00pm.Safari Picture

During Safari Night, you'll drop your child off at Hilltop for the evening while you go out to dinner. Or go shopping. Or just relax in the quiet. Meanwhile, your child will play with friends, have a delicious dinner, and prepare for the main event: the Big Safari Hunt!

After dark, flashlights in hand, the intrepid Safari Hunters will search the Hilltop play yard for stuffed animals lurking about and take home their bounty. After the yard is picked clean, they'll get ready for bed (Yes! Including teeth brushed!) and have a Safari-themed bedtime story.

Children need to be ages 2 through 6 to participate. The cost is $35 for the first child and $25 for each additional child.

We will need a minimum of six parents to work this event in order to maintain a 5 to 1 ratio. Working this event is a fun and easy way to earn Ways & Means hours for the year. In addition to earning your Ways & Means hours, children of parents working the event will be half-price.

A sign-up sheet for parents who want to work the event and earn Ways & Means hours is posted at Hilltop, as well as sign-ups for children. But don't delay! Last year we sold out all the available slots. Also, please start collecting stuffed animals for our safari hunt! A basket will be available at Hilltop soon to drop off your cuddly donations!

Reminder: Open House is Thursday, March 4th from 2pm to 4pm. Please help us get the word out about this event!
    Open House Flyer

Priority registration for current Hilltop families will begin the week of February 15th. Look for details to be sent out via email this week. Current families will have two weeks to complete their priority registration for next year before registration is opened to new families at Open House.

    CCPPNS Conference

Hilltop belongs to an organization called The California Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools (CCPPNS). This organization is a state-wide community of parents and educators committed to teaching and inspiring families through parent involvement and mutual support.

Each year, CCPPNS organizes a conference with workshops and speakers open to interested parents and teachers. This year's conference - it's 61st annual - is entitled "Building a Better CCPPNS ConferenceTomorrow" and will be held on Friday and Saturday March 12th and 13th at the LAX Sheraton.

This year's speakers include Dr. Wendy Mogel, author of "The Blessings of a Skinned Knee" and Dr. Peter Levine, director of the Foundation for Human Enrichment. In addition, there are numerous interesting workshops to attend.

For more information about the conference and to register please go to the conference website.

    Pre-K Discoveries

The year is passing quickly and we are discovering so much in pre-k. The children just seem to blossom in this midway point. Watching them develop empathy and understanding and more complex problem solving has been a great joy. What a wonderful family we have formed.

Pre-K DiscoveriesThroughout December and January we have had many projects going on in the classroom. We have developed a fascination with salt and salt crystals which evolved from a mistake of putting rocks mixed with salt rocks in our empty fish tank. In this happy misstep we have had opportunity not only to explore concepts such as evaporation, saturation and crystallization – we have been able to predict, hypothesize and re-evaluate from our findings. We have touched each other and excited each other with wonder and discovery.

We began sewing doll clothes because our babies seem to have none and many of the children are hard at work developing fine motor skills and dexterity from this project.
And of course there is so much more. The children have led us on a wonderful journey.

    Parent/Teacher Lessons from the classroom

Lesson #1: Each step on the road has value even the wrong turns. (Salt in water children are playing with burns hands – but it makes cool salt crystals and leads to discovery and learning.)

Lesson #2: See a need – fill it and you will be rewarded in ways you may never even realize. (Dolls need clothes – make them and you will learn and gain strength and skill.)

Teaching and parenthood provide powerful opportunities to look at things in a new light. Children may teach us far more about what is important – what is foundational to life than we could ever teach them. When in doubt – think like a child - with your mind wide open with wonder and you will find more joy and more solution.

    Music Together Comes to Co-Op

The sounds of music will soon be doubly heard at Hilltop as Ms. Kindel and her popular Music Together program will be coming Music Togetherto the co-op classroom beginning February 16th. The co-op Music Together class will be held every Tuesday and Wednesday from 12:15pm to 12:55pm. (Pre-K will continue to have music on Thursdays at 9:30am)

Co-op children who don't normally attend Hilltop on Tuesdays or Wednesdays are invited and encouraged to come and participate in the music program portion of either day.

Music Together's preschool music program uniquely integrates music experiences at home with those in school to create a music-making community which supports a child's language, cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development.

Both the Pre-K and the Co-op classes will be singing the same collection of songs. Watch for your child's songbook and CD to be placed in your parent folder to take home and enjoy!
