Sponsor TEAM HILLTOP in the Surf City Marathon

    Hello, Everybody!!

The Surf City Marathon is rapidly approaching and TEAM HILLTOP is training hard. Among those Hilltop-ers running the 1/2 marathon on February 7th are Lisa and Kevin Mullens, Anthonette Vicencio, and Matt and Laura Ehrlich. Go team!

But this is more than a race. This is an opportunity to raise funds for Hilltop. A Hilltop alumni family is generously matching all sponsorships of TEAM HILLTOP, and his employer is matching that match. Sooooooo, here's what your donation looks like. Let's say you sponsor TEAM HILLTOP for $50 (this is just an example, any amount large or small will be valuable):

    • Your tax-deductible $50 donation
    • Plus $50 alumni family match
    • Plus $50 alumni family employer match
    • Equals a whopping $150 for Hilltop!

Our goal is to raise $2,000. But let's see if we can beat that!

A donation poster including the donation box will be at Hilltop starting this week. Surf CityPlease make checks out to "Hilltop Preschool" and mention "Surf City Marathon" in the comment section. A receipt for your donation will be put in your parent boxes after the event. Remember, your donation is tax deductible.

If you have any questions, please let Lisa Mullens know. Thanks, and GO TEAM HILLTOP!

    In-Service & Tide Pools

Hilltop will be closed for Teacher In-Service Days on Thursday and Friday, January 28th and 29th, 2010. This closure will allow our teachers to attend a child development workshop and conference as a team.

    Tide Pools

For those who are able to join us, we will be taking the opportunity to visit the Tide Pool in Corona del Mar on Thursday, January 28th. More information will be emailed out as well as put in your parent boxes shortly.

    Cash for Old Electronic Items

RecycleDuring the month of January, Hilltop will be participating in a recycling program for electronics. And the best part is, we will receive cash for the items we collect and send in!

A full list of items accepted for recycle will be made available soon. Simply bring your items in to Hilltop and place them in the designated cardboard box. Bring in your neighbors' and friends' items too - the more we send in the more cash we get back.

    Winter Fun Recipes

With the colder days (well, theoretically; maybe not so much lately) and the early nights, here are two recipes to bring Hilltop joy home:

    PlaydoughCooked Playdough

Try out this easy recipe for a fun winter activity

    4 cups flour
    2 cups salt
    4 Tbsp Cream of Tartar
    4 cups water
    2 Tbsp oil

Add food coloring or liquid water color to the mixture, but not too much or the playdough gets slimy. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until stiff. Let cool and knead.

Store in Ziploc bag or plastic container.

    .............................................................................................................................

    Flubber

FlubberHilltop wouldn't be Hilltop without flubber!

    • Step 1: Mix 1 1/2 cups water with 16oz. (2 cups) glue. Add food coloring or liquid water color.
    • Step 2: Mix 1 tsp. Borax and 1/3 cup water.
    • Step 3: Pour Borax water into glue water and remove resulting flubber.
    • Repeat Step 3 until all the glue water is absorbed.

Store in Ziploc bag or plastic container. If flubber gets on clothes, immediately soak in water before washing normally.
